MYC & Subramania Bharathi

Late Sri M.B. Srinivasan, our Director and Composer, was one of those who identified himself with the fiery spirit that emerged from the literary works of Mahakavi Subramanya Bharathi. It came quite easily for him to depict the poet’s concepts and philosophy through his brilliant musical creativity. We have about twenty-five songs of Bharathi that have been composed for the choir.

A city-based organization, Vanavil Pannpaattu Maiyam, which celebrates Bharathi’s anniversary every year by inviting well-known musicians to perform Bharathi’s songs during the week-long celebrations which are held at Bharathi’s house in Chennai, have been unfailingly extending an invitation to the Madras Youth Choir to perform Bharathi’s songs for them for the past eight years.

Classical Music & Choral Music

The Choir has also performed carnatic classical music on special occasions. Madhura Geetham was one such concert of rare traditional compositions, conceived and conducted by our own Instructor. Later, as a part of the South India Heritage Series, the Choir was invited to present a few compositions of a great musician Harikesanallur Muthiah Bhagavathar, who was a great patron of choral music during his life-time. Western harmonic traditions mingled with classical carnatic melodies was a very unusual and unique genre, which was greatly appreciated.

School Choirs

Apart from the above mentioned projects, MYC also conducts choir camps and trains a number of students from various different schools. MYC also has it’s own Junior Choir which was initially launched for it’s 25th Anniversary. Over the years, MYC has been instrumental in taking Choral music to over 50 schools. Here are a few with whom we presently work extensively with:
• Vidyaniketan, Ashoknagar
• Saraswathi Vidyalaya, Kodambakkam
• Navbharath Matriculation School, Kodambakkam
• TVS Academy, Hosur
• Gurukulam School, Kovalam
